Over 16 million children in the United States are separated from at least one of their parents. Whether the living arrangements for these children are decided by the parents or by the courts, at least one parent suffers from the separation. More often, both parents suffer, as do the children. Child custody arrangements rarely completely satisfy anyone.

Decisions regarding custody arrangements are allegedly made "in the best interests of the child." Though parents may acknowledge that the children's needs are being met, they find they have many unmet needs of their own. Generally, separated parents do not know how to find satisfaction in their parenting role without interfering with the needs of the children.

Whether the separation is due to the settlement of an unpleasant divorce or to incarceration, many parents find themselves using their energy to complain and to blame others. In time, such parents find they and their children are growing apart.

This book is designed to assist parents who are separated from their children to strengthen their bonds, through learning rights they have and responsibilities they can accept, even though they are apart.

By using their energy for positive action rather than for complaining and blaming, parents find they are not merely separated from their children but are "parenting from a distance."
